Welcome to the CRWG

The CRWG

The Canadian Research Working Group for Evidence-Based Practice in Career Development (CRWG) was formed in response to recommendations from the first pan-Canadian Symposium on Career Development, Lifelong Learning and Workforce Development held in 2003.  The CRWG was formed to address two important issues:

  • Increase pan-Canadian sharing of research and promising practices, with an emphasis on sharing French and English research;
  • Strengthen the overall evidence base for career development practice with an emphasis on informing policy.

Members of the CRWG are independent researchers and engage in distinct and related research projects separate from the CRWG.    Members of the CRWG also form collaborative working groups with international researchers.

The CRWG has an ambitious research and development agenda to create an effective and accurate system for measuring the impact of career services.  Two pan-Canadian projects, funded by Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) have been undertaken to date:

  • A 2005 study to explore the current state of evidence-based career development practice in Canada:“The State of Practice in Canada in Measuring Career Service Impact: A CRWG Report” by principal researchers Dr.Kris Magnusson and Dr. Vivian Lalande;
  • “Meeting Workplace Skill Needs: The Career Development Contribution”, a three year project to pilot a number of workplace interventions intended to increase employee engagement and motivation with their work and workplace.  This project will also build the evidence base for the outcomes and impacts of career development applications.

CRWG members contribute to professional conferences and to the International Centre for Career Development and Public Policy and members have forged research alliances with researchers in Finland and the United Kingdom.
